Sources of Protein Supplements

Whey protein contains about 70 to 85% of protein. It is a by-product gotten during the production of cheese. It makes up 20% of the protein content found in milk. In the past it was wrongly considered as waste but is now the most popular source for protein supplements. It has high BV ratings and richly contains amino acids such as isoleucine, valine and leucine. These amino acids are good muscle builders. This form of protein is fast to digest and contains low levels of arginine and glutamine.

Whey Isolate is a higher and more expensive protein source. It contains higher BV ratings, less fat and is made up of about 90 to 98% of protein. Whey Concentrate is a cost effective protein source among the whey family. It is made up of about 70 to 80% of protein.



Casein Protein is an essential protein that accounts for about 80% of milk protein. It is a slow digesting protein isolated from milk. It is made up of 92% of protein and comes with a thick taste. It has relatively lower BV content but is good for weight gainers and muscle builders. Supplements containing casein encourages the conversion of carbs and fat into energy. Casein has high glutamine content is used for bodybuilding supplements.

Egg white or egg albumin contains large quantities of essential amino acids. It has lower cholesterol content that egg yolk. Eggs are one of the highest sources of protein and are best for people who are lactose intolerant.

Soy protein is a fast digesting form. It is not as effective as casein or milk and may not be the best supplement for muscle builders. Goat milk is considered as one of the highest sources of quality supplements. It has a BV rating of 104, higher than egg which has a rating of 100. Goat milk is high in BCAA and has zero lactose content. This makes goat milk a more superior source compared with other sources.

Wheat is derived from wheat and is a healthy alternative to egg and milk based sources. It is completely cholesterol and lactose free and is perfect for bodybuilders and athletes who are vegetarians. It has a high source of glutamic acid which is good for the body.


Pea protein is another good alternative for vegetarians. It is completely lactose and cholesterol free and has no gluten content. Pea protein is very rich in amino acids and is very easy to digest.

Complete milk protein is derived from dried milk protein from which the fat carbs content has been removed. This form of protein is very rich and nutritious with high calcium, vitamins and mineral content. It contains both casein and whey proteins and is great for bodybuilding supplements.
